I am a theatre director and I am going to confess something:

I haven’t read Valle-Inclán (welll, I did read Luces de Bohemia at school). But I have directed in a theatre that bears his name.

I know he was Galician, bad-tempered and one-armed. And that he had a spectacular beard. I know he was eccentric, multi-sided, indomitable, and polemical. Gargantuan.

A myth, a legend, a character. A self-made character.

A father of 20th century literature. Another parent to deal with. Another parent to venerate and then rebel against. Another parent to kill. But before that, first, I have to get to know him better.

And for this I am going to travel for a month to the Real Academia de España in Rome, with a mission: to rediscover his time there as director and to investigate his incendiary relationship with both the ministerial authorities and the scholarship holders in his charge, in what were the last three years of his life before his death in 1936. I am going to put the cart before the horse. I’m going to start this story at the end.
